Auckland Judo Group on Facebook

An Auckland Judo Association group has been established on Facebook for the discussion of Judo and coordination of events in the Auckland region. It is an open group and all players and friends of Judo are encouraged to sign up. It will, of course, be miraculous if anyone actually uses it to benefit Judo or the society of players -- one can but supply the mechanisms and hope.

Thinking About Starting Judo?

Training at Uni Judo is not unlike training to be a North Korean Bodyguard, but with slightly more emphasis placed on throws and ground work than strikes and smashing stuff. Another difference is that we have a beer fridge by the side of the mat. The North Koreans don't.

Kong's Anti-Drugs Campaign

Jono sends in the following:

Kong says: Jono -- This footage appears to be of some crack addled street messiah cum urban outdoorsman who managed to break into someone’s home, find a clean gi, a video recorder, and then set about tormenting the house dog. Somehow, just because he’s wearing a gi, the dog’s wearing a gi, and we frequently wear gi’s, we’re supposed to overlook the f#$ktarded impulse at work here propelling this freak? This man needs more than a haircut. He's on crack. Crack's bad Jono. For the sake of your Judo say no crack.
I bet that as soon as he was done filming this he stole the television, did some weird stuff in the bath room, and bragged about it on his creepy Bebo site.

We are really pleased to have received an email this morning from the president of the NZ Judo Federation officially approving our team!
Here is the important bit of the email:
"... Please accept this email as a formal approval for your team to represent New Zealand in the upcoming World Masters and Good Luck to you all..."
This has come directly from Harry O'Rourke, President of the New Zealand Judo Federation.
This is great news for the team and Harry's support is a real boost just before we compete!!!

Flexibility for Judo

Let’s take a moment out from the heat of election year and address one of the pressing issues in the club -- Flexibility (or the lack thereof). It's an issue, a major issue! With a view to promoting more training in this critical area please take some inspiration (or at least be hypnotized) by the following demonstrations by Irina Kazakova:

Letter From Nicky About the Elections

Dear Kong,

I just read on that other site what the Governator promised to do for Judo in Auckland if he is elected. I agree with almost everything he says (particularly the bit about kicking the North Shore out of the AJA), but I still think I would be a better President. Please encourage all the Uni players to vote for me not Putin or the Governator.

By the way, did I mention that I have great boobs?

Love

Nicky

Ps: Vote for me not the Governator.

Seconds Out

Our team of lawyers are almost finished, Ben's revised Kata series has shifted one further stage along, and things are in the works of a kind and nature that cannot be safely mentioned at this point. The essential matter, of course, is that it’s coming and it promises to be:

'Intelligensia' Dinner a Success -- Cheers Sensei!

Congrats Jono!

The club offers its congratulations to Jono for the award of his yellow belt. His commitment and dedication to training these last few months is something we can all take something from; so too his enthusiasm for experimenting with new techniques. Keep it up Jono and before long you will transcend the citrus coloured ranks.

Flying Arm Bar Variation

Simon also sent in a link to the following flying arm-bar variation that caught his attention:

Least we forget that it is the season of Chuck Norris, please enjoy this vision from your past (not that many players in the club are this flexible...):

Chuck Norris Unable to Attend US Olympic Judo Trials

USJUDO.ORG reports that Chuck Norris Wishes US Judo Olympic Trial Participants Good Luck! According to USJUDO, Chuck Norris was invited to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Judo, but will be unable to attend as he is working on his new book "How to Reawaken America.” USJUDO even has a link to view Norris' letter wishing trials participants good luck. See: http://www.usjudo.org/2008OlympicTrials.asp.

Since it is the season of Chuck Norris on judokong, let’s celebrate by reviewing one of the defining scenes in martial arts cinema:

The Chuck Norris Season

You asked for it (actually it was Simon to be precise) -- the season of Chuck Norris! For the next few weeks Kong will write about nothing but Chuck Norris. To inaugurate the season here is some truly bizarre footage from youtube. Be prepared. In the following you will see Chuck Norris (sporting a ferocious mullet) and Carlos Machado performing a series of Kosen Judo techniques (they call BJJ) in front of a live studio audience in Germany, with a glam-metal soundtrack playing in the background. The footage is just one more reminder that, once upon a time, back in a golden-age when men could still wear a hairy chest with dignity, doing a martial art was fashionably cool.

Judo Pedagogy: On Economy and Efficiency

In the “Contribution of Judo to Education,” Professor Kano places a heavy stress on the virtues of economy and efficiency:
“If the object be simply training in the method of attack and defense, the attention should be especially directed to the training in the most efficient ways of throwing, bending or twisting, without special reference to developing the body or to mental and moral culture. Randori can also be studied with physical education as its main objective. From what I have already said, anything to be ideal must be performed on "the principle of maximum efficiency."

These principles have since been absorbed and applied to every facet of life by the wider Judo community.

The Chronicles of Rick Sensei: The Dalai Lama and I

It was a few years ago when the America’s cup was on and the telecom companies were putting new telecoms communication lines in Queen st every few months, and they refused to put then in the same trench with each other on the grounds that an other company may see what color wires they were using.
Twice we had stopped workmen from starting up their concrete cutting machines outside our Tanuki Japanese sake bar at 6.30 pm with threats that if they didn’t stop immediately my 5 foot tall Japanese waitresses would turn the fire hose on them…this plus a urgent phone call from the mayor’s office sent them on their merry way.

Some time before we had a little Japanese judo girl come from Budo University in Japan to study English (which was very limited) and do judo so we put her up above the sake bar thinking that she would be more at home with all the staff around. Two days later she came to me and said that she had seen a ghost in her room and that she was moving out. Japanese being very superstitious people we didn’t tell any of the other staff and left it at that.
A year passed and l asked one other Japanese girl who was staying in the same room if she had seen any ghosts and she said yes! What form I asked ? A female shape was the answer. Further inquires revealed that the ground where all our buildings sit was a bank for the river which ran down Greys ave, so it was quite possible that the local Maoris used the high point for a burial ground in ancient times. When a third girl revealed that she too had seen a ghost upstairs and with business not good from the above [America’s Cup and road works] I decided that maybe the building should be exercised of ghosts and other unwanted items.
First I rang the city council as its was their building and inquired if any records showed peopled being killed or murdered there…drew a blank on that one so I asked “could we have the Auckland city Maori Tohunga [priest] for exorcisms?” This done he contacted me and suggested that as all the staff were Buddhists that using a Buddhist priest would be best. Hmm! that wasn’t much help.
So next low contacted the Catholic Church who do exorcisms all the time. “Yes” was the answer but it would cost $200. On the grounds that I pay my taxes I politely declined. Next, I let my fingers do the walking, yellow pages, Buddhists for hire. The 1st two drew a blank, but the 3rd was more helpful. Was I genuine? she asked (because some nasty peopled had poked fun at Buddha…like Buddha sticks, coffee bars etc… “No! no! this was genuine a enquiry” I said and explained the situation to her, to which she agreed to enquire on our behalf and would contact us again when she had made contact with the lama.
A week went by and no telephone call and I had just about given up when she rang back. “Sorry for the delay” she said “the lama had been out of town.” So quick as flash I asked if they didn't have “a dial a lama,” to which she asked “what did I mean?” Dial a lama , you know telephone etc.. “Ohh” she said, not very impressed with my quick wit, and then she said “don't contact us! we will contact you.” So I was back to square one, a Maori ghost running around scaring my Japanese staff.
Next, I explained the situation to Judy my rather large sake bar manager at the time and she said , “well! I believe in the supernatural and I so happen to know someone who does exorcism.” “Ohh!” I said “how much this would cost?” “Nothing” was the reply as “they are only part-time workers.” Well in that case I said “lets give then a try.”
They were contacted and agreed to come the next Tuesday at 6 pm. The appointed day arrived and we were introduced and they asked where the ghosts had been sighted. So l took them upstairs and showed them where to which they replied “Yes! We can feel it.” So l left them to it. An hour later, after much chanting, they came down and said the ghost was gone and would not come back. I had thought of asking for a written guarantee but left it at that. l offered them some Japanese food and drink to which they politely declined and took some sushi.
The morale of the story is that the ghosts never came back, nor did the telecoms and business has been going up ever since.

Congrats Paul!

Paul added an orange belt to his vast techni-colored array of belts accumulated in other disciplines (incl. Aikido & Systema). Good work Paul, the club is proud of your success and we hope to have you training with us until you're a decrepit old man forced to use a walker (...by which time Sensei Rick will have full developed various forms of pensioner waza so even then you'll have no excuse to quit).

Can Judo Players Find Success Across the Spectrum in MMA?

By Beau Dure, USA TODAY
The next mixed martial arts star could be competing in Beijing this summer.
The frenetic competition in the cage has enticed several accomplished college and international wrestlers — such as Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar and Urijah Faber — to sign up with MMA promoters. But MMA also has plenty in common with one of the Olympic martial arts — judo.
Judo resembles MMA's grappling aspects, particularly when both fighters are on the ground. MMA fans would easily recognize judo's submissions — a fighter might "tap out," or concede the fight, when caught in a chokehold or an armbar.
It's little wonder Ronda Rousey, known for winning many of her bouts by armbar, has heard people suggesting she could switch sports.
"I have quite a few people who have been trying to get me to do MMA," Rousey says. "A coach has been talking to me about teaching me striking (punches, kicks) after the Olympics."
For now, she's focused on Beijing. Then she might focus on education and, perhaps, twisting her mother's arm.
"My mom's generally not a big fan of the idea, so we'll see if I can convince her," Rousey says.
Ryan Reser hopes that curious MMA fans will check out his sport.
"I just try to promote our sport as much as possible and say, 'Look, we've been doing this for years.' " Reser says. "Obviously we're not into striking and all that stuff, but the same competitive takedowns, arm locks, chokes … we've been doing that forever."
Wrestler Mo Lawal trains in both sports to keep his workouts varied and interesting. He says his work in MMA helps him in his more traditional sport.
"I keep moving, because when I'm training MMA, as soon as I stay still, I get hit a couple of times and kicked," Lawal says. "When I'm wrestling, if I'm staying still, I get taken down. So I'm trying to relate those two."
But Lawal takes pride in his competitive sport.
"The wrestlers that go to MMA real soon are the ones that have no chance of making the Olympic team," Lawal says. "All the top fighters that are wrestlers jump into the MMA game in their late 20s. Good wrestlers stick in the wrestling game for a while."

Aikido Techniques for Judo Players

To be a finely tuned weapon, ready and prepared to handle any situation, the modern Judoka needs a vast repertoire of techniques (that can be applied to all spheres of life). Here are some techniques borrowed from Aikido, demonstrated by Seagal, that are sure to keep you out of harms way. These deadly acting-waza techniques can be applied equally well during a major cinema production, board meeting, interacting with work colleagues, or simply when talking with your partner.

FAIL! No Break-Fall

McCain and the MMA

[The following article is taken from: www.desertdispatch.com/opinion/mccain_3503___article.html/leave_alone.html]
If John McCain becomes president, will he leave me alone?

You might think so. After all, he’s got Grover Norquist in his corner, and Norquist wrote “Leave Us Alone: Getting the Government’s Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives.”
The book makes a good case for “Americans who simply wish to be left alone by the government. They are not asking the government for others’ money, time, or attention. Rather, they want to be free to own a gun, homeschool their children, pray, invest their money, and control their own destiny.”
What if people want to fight each other?
I ask because mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions are booming.
“Mixed” martial arts is ... what it sounds like. Athletes combine boxing, wrestling, judo, karate, etc. to knock someone out or get them to submit.
MMA fascinates people — frankly, mostly male people who, like me, wondered about things like whether karate is more effective than judo. MMA answers such questions.
The big promoter of the sport, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, popularized MMA by setting rules (no eye gouging or finger twisting) and doing TV promotions with interesting fighters. People want to watch. A million viewers recently tuned in to a $39.95 pay-per-view event. Last week, one of their events hit network TV for the first time.
So now kids want to do it. And some parents think that’s just fine.
But some politicians say this is terrible.
Sen. John McCain — yes, that John McCain — once called the adult version of MMA “human cockfighting.” He wrote letters to the governor of every state asking them to ban it. At McCain’s urging, pay-per-view events were dropped by major cable companies TCI and Time Warner. Now it is back on TV, and some states have removed bans after seeing the lost business opportunities.
We called McCain’s office to see if he’s changed his opinion, but no one called back.
Mayor Robert Correia of Fall River, Mass., was horrified to learn that there was an MMA academy in his town, not far from his office. It teaches ultimate fighting to kids as young as 5.
“That’s irresponsible,” the mayor told me, “To allow this to be taught to our children and for adults to stand by and cheer this on?”
Correia wants MMA banned in his town and the gym shut down. It teaches kids the wrong things, he says.
“It’s telling them, look, the best thing to do is hurt someone.”
“Nonsense,” said moms at the gym. They told me the mayor was clueless and that MMA is little different from karate or judo classes.
The mayor replied that some parents just don’t know what’s good for their kids. He’d heard that MMA is unsafe.
It’s not surprising that he’d heard that, since predictably, the media hypes every danger.
“Good Morning America” aired a clip of pediatrician Lisa Thornton saying, “it is dangerous from a physical standpoint. It can lead to significant injuries to the neck and to the bones.”
MMA could injure, of course, but a study from Johns Hopkins found that “the injury rate in MMA competitions is compatible with other combat sports,” and, in fact, “the lower knockout rates compared to boxing may help prevent brain injury.”
No sport is injury free. Over six years, 77 kids died after being hit in the chest with baseballs. Every year hundreds die riding bikes. No one has yet gathered comparative statistics on the risk of MMA, but even cheerleading sends 25,000 kids to hospital emergency rooms.
When I said that to Mayor Correia, he replied, “That logic would say, Well, let’s now add another 25,000 in mixed martial arts. That’s OK?”
Parents aren’t responsible enough? The politicians need to make these decisions for them?
He replied, “Parents do have a chance to decide that through their elected officers. That’s what a democracy is all about.”
Really? I had no idea democracy was about voting on who gets to tell you how to raise your kids.
Give me a break!

Peace And Sport, Judo Federation Agree

The international organization Peace and Sport, and the International Judo Federation (IJF), signed a major global agreement Thursday during the 2008 SportAccord Convention in Athens, to set up joint programs aimed at education and development in the world using sport as the vector.

According to a media release the partnership strengthens Peace and Sport’s capacity to implement projects designed to bring the thrill and discipline of sports to underprivileged kids. The organization will benefit from the IJF’s support, technical resources and expertise to help improve living conditions for thousands of young people in distress.

Peace and Sport is based in Monaco under the High Patronage of Prince Albert II and acts in targeted areas ravaged by poverty, lack of social cohesion, or in the aftermath of armed conflict. It uses the values and the practice of sport to reconcile divided communities and to achieve sustainable peace, said the media release.

The organization works in close collaboration with governments and local parties and has the support of National and International Sports Federations, National Olympic Committees, and elite athletes to implement its programs.

The Chronicles of Rick Sensei: The Transvestite and I or My Date With A Transvestite

Cat life no 7.
One day last month on a Sunday afternoon, my dog and I were doing some last minute cleaning up from our recently shifted to new home for Auckland martial arts at 315 queen St.
Carrying some rubbish to the street bin, my dog spotted a transvestite and a customer sitting on the footpath outside the comedy bar with a customer eating a hamburger. My Yorkshire terrier seeing food went over to investigate finished with the rubbish saw my dog eating some meat, wandering over I waited for my dog to finish and then quietly pick the dog and started to walk back to the shop when I suddenly received a big kick up the arse. I spun round to find the transvestite four letter mouthing me off for taking the dog away when it was feeding it.
My response to this attack was to smack it in the ear which earnt me a hamburger being thrown in my faced .Now its been a while since I’ve had any hamburger throwing practice hence I missed.
Next, the transvestite attacked me with a bottle, now this is serious stuff to attack a 61-year and with 42 years of judo experience so dropping the dog I went into goshinjitsu mode [self defense kata] and threw the bitch on the concrete. As it went over it tied to bite me and flashes of oh! oh! aids, hepatitis a, b, and c flashed into my mind. This was followed by a thud[her body hitting the ground] a screech next moment its on the ground with my hand squeezing it throat like a tube of colgates.
My right hand takes the bottle from its hand which I gave to her customer whom had been trying to stop the whole thing.
I then made the biggest mistake in my life by letting it go instead of kicking the shit out of it and breaking both of its arms because when I let it go because the transvestite then attacked me with two bottles.
Plan B.
Martial arts shuffle backwards, worked as both bottles missed.
In the meantime, my daughter is on the phone to the police, who after asking in a slow mechanical type voice twice where was it ,what was happening ,and who was being attacked. They finally asked if that was the Rick Littlewood who did judo?
Meanwhile, back on Queen St, two more bottle attacks later, a W.W.2 veteran was trying to collect the bottles from the street so the transvetite would have nothing to throw.
For his effects, the transvestite shoved a broken bottle into his face, the old digger never flinched and stood his ground until l raced up and dragged him away, still no sign of the cops whose H.Q. is 100 m away.
Finally, the transvestite and customer hail a taxi and jump in. We got the number and re-contacted the police, whose answer was: sorry we are too busy day please come back later.
Morale of this story;
Don’t call the police unless you are already dead or you are a black American golf loser who needs 100 police to protect him.
