Communication From Judo NZ/NZJF/Dave Browne

Dear Kong,

Please publish this on the University website -- we all know it's the only Judo blog in New Zealand that is regularly updated and is actually read by the community (even those of us that offered such animated protests about all the tits on the "real" AJA page).

As you are all aware significant changes been made in recent times within Judo New Zealand including a new Board, the adoption of a new constitution, the appointments of the National Technical and Business Directors, and a move to have more of our processes online.

We are now looking at the appropriateness of the various Commission structures.

One of the most significant changes that could be contemplated is the separation of the Coaching Commission into two distinct parts.

One part will be responsible for Coaching Development ( e.g. Coaching the Coaches).

The other part will be responsible for connecting with our high performance athletes and delivering on our primary goal of winning medals at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow in 2014.

It is important we get this latter part right and we wish to consult within the New Zealand judo coaching community before reaching a decision on how we move forward.

As a person with an interest in the coaching side of judo above national level we are looking for your input, ideas and thoughts on what you think would be the best processes and/or structure for JNZ to adopt in its interaction with our athletes, their coaches and their clubs to achieve our 2014 goal.

Please bear in mind that the any role or roles developed will voluntary although we are earmarking funds for programme delivery.

Please send any thoughts you have on the subject to me in the first instance by 31 March.

Kind regards
Dave Browne [dave@propertypeople.co.nz]
President – Judo New Zealand

Club Notice: Judo Russian's Performance With Beer(s)

Uni Judo, being much like the United Nations, prides itself in being a supporter of the arts. Consequently we are proud to announce that, this Friday after training, Tim will give a Russian poetry reading with beer! Tim writes: “I got letter from Max that I would like to read to the club members on Friday.” Tim, being naturally mysterious and Russian, intimidates that there is free beer involved in his reading (which apparently does not include an interpretive dance segment with tambourines and ribbons). “So I would appreciate if perhaps we can boost somehow the numbers this week, it's a lot of free beers. ....................... a lot.” So there you have it. Friday..."Dances with Beers: A Russian Soliloquy" at the Dojo.

New Fiends of the Judo Club and Guests Register

At the bequest of Sensei Rick a new section will be added to judokong.com shortly called an International friends (or fiends) page. It will be like a guest book where past members or visiting guests from other countries can leave their details. The theory is that, as time goes by, members from the Uni Judo club can turn up at an inconvenient time, drink your beer, and play some Judo. While a good idea in practice it will probably translate into a vehicle for privacy abuses. Nonetheless, it’s going to happen anyway.
The point of this is that if you are en ex-member living overseas, long-time member of the club currently elsewhere, former guest of the club, or just some creepy person who wants to claim any of the former, send your details: r.littlewood@xtra.co.nz. Cheers.

A Note From Chile!

Hi Rick,

thought I'd write a quick note to say hello and to suggest adding our judo club here to the list of friends/foes on the Judokong website. The details are:

Club de Judo Carabineros de Santiago de Chile: http://www.todojudo.cl/

A lot of activity in the club at the moment: we had the nationals last weekend (I came 5th in the under-90s....and there were more than 5 competitors!), and we are hosting an international tournament in May. How is everything at the University club?

Aside from that, scratching around for work here while looking for a job in NZ to come back to. Hoping to hear back on a couple of things in the coming weeks.

Say hi to everyone for me. See you back on the mat soon.

Cheers,

Barney

Discussion on the New Judo Rules by Refs

"Soul-less" North Shore Venue Chosen for Auckland International

Debbie Downing, Sports Director for Auckland Judo writes:
Just a quick update on the 2009 Auckland International Open. This year the event has moved back to the North Shore and will be held at the North Shore Events Centre (where the Breakers usually play their home games). For those of you who have been to competitions at AUT, it is less than 5 minutes drive from there.
We have a number of overseas entries confirmed already. They are: Indonesia (12 players both Men and Women, Junior and Senior), Philippines, New Caledonia and several Australian clubs. There have also been expressions of interest from Singapore, Macau, India and Hong Kong. We are also hopeful Tahiti will return with their large contingent of Under 14s.
There are currently cheap flights to Auckland that weekend from most centres, so suggest you book early and take advantage of these savings.
I have been asked about likely finish times on both days. As you are no doubt aware this depends entirely on number of entries and very hard to predict at this stage. We will again be running 3 competition mats and expect little if any down time. I don’t see Saturday finishing until at LEAST 7pm and Sunday 5pm so bear that in mind when booking flights.
We will not be setting up the venue until 10pm on the Friday night due to a basketball game being held however I will ensure scales are there from 8pm that night for a trial weigh in.
Any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.
Looking forward to a good turnout of Kiwis at this event!

Karo's Been on the Krack

[By FoxSports.com]UFC welterweight Karo Parisyan has been issued a formal eight-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Parisyan tested positive for hydrocodone, oxymorphone and hydromorphone following a split-decision win over Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94 on Jan. 31.

In addition to the suspension, Parisyan has been fined $32,000, which is 40 percent of his $80,000 purse. Parisyan was paid $40,000 to show and a win bonus worth the same amount.

The commission's ruling drops Parisyan's record to 18-5, while Kim's perfect record remains in tact at 11-0-1. Had the decision not been altered, Kim would have dropped his first bout to the Armenian judo specialist.

Parisyan's positive test was first reported Feb. 10, meaning that his suspension would have officially commenced on that date.

Parisyan has already appealed the suspension and a hearing is expected to be announced soon.

When I Say I'm Broke!!!

Yesterday I answered a knock on the door, only to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner..
'Good morning,' said the young man. 'If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in
high-powered vacuum cleaners.'
'Go away!' I said. 'I haven't got any money!', 'I'm broke!' and
proceeded to close the door.
Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed wide open.. 'Don 't be too hasty!' he said. 'Not until you have at least seen my demonstration'. And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto my hallway carpet. 'If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Sir, I will personally eat the remainder.'
I stepped back and said, 'Well I hope you've got a Fricking good appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning. What part of broke do you not understand?
